VOX Pops

“Well, I feel that voting gives me the right to contribute, criticise the result, and probably complain about the outcome.”
Vox pop
"It feels amazing to be able to exercise my democratic right to have a say in who will be my local member as well as which party will be elected to form Government."
Vox pop
How do you feel about voting for the first-time? "A little bit nervous 'cos I feel underprepared and like I haven't researched my options very well."
Vox pop
"I'm probably more influenced by how good their party will be at economic management since that's all I really care about apart from the environment at the moment. Hopefully when I leave [University] there will still be nice jobs thanks to a good economy."
Vox pop
How do you feel about voting for the first time? "Excited and a little anxious as it's a new experience and having the right to vote I believe is very important, so I want to be able to make it count."
Vox pop
How do you feel about voting for the first time? Apathetic. Really, really apathetic. It's just one vote out of countless thousands of votes, so it won't make much of a difference...It doesn't really matter who I vote for because whoever gets in will lie and cheat and waste money like all the other governments have before.
Vox pop
The main issue that will be affecting my vote is the parties' stances on industrial relations. Also, human rights are very important, and since Australia's record isn't very good, I'd like to see the parties' plans on how to fix it.
Vox pop
I think it is quite confusing how the main parties advertise their leaders as the person you are voting for, when you really are voting for the candidate in your electorate.
Vox pop
I'm really pleased to be voting for the first time. I recently became an Australian citizen after moving to Australia from England five years ago, and I love it here. So I feel privileged to be able to contribute to the running of my new home.
Vox pop
How do you feel about voting for the first time? It doesn't really bother me- the politicians won't keep their promise anyway, I'm only doing it because I have to.
Vox pop
I enrolled early just to make sure I'd be able to vote in the election and I'm a big believer in having a say.
Vox pop
I think the most confusing thing about voting for me is the fact that everyone is making promises. But you have to look past a lot of that because so much of the time those promises cant be met so they're just there to snag voters.
Vox pop
"I don't know very much about the history of Australian politics, so I'm not sure whether the Liberal Party has a better track record than the Labor Party, or vice-versa. And I think that is something important to consider when voting."
Vox pop
"I semi understand that you vote for your electorate and then for the nation depending on the outcomes from the electorate. And I understand the general gist of the leading parties, but I wouldn't feel confident enough to explain anything."
Vox pop
"Although it's one vote, I look forward to the thought that there will be many many many more single votes who feel the same way as me towards the incumbent Federal Government."
Vox pop
"I'm really excited because at least now I can have my say, and make a contribution to the results, rather than having to sit back and just watch the country choose our leader."
Vox pop
"I can't understand why it is that relatively nothing happens during each term, but as soon as an election comes up, it's a flurry of activity. I obviously understand the reasoning behind it, but it's at odds with what I'd call good government."
Vox pop
"There's so much going on in politics, but I don't understand the majority because the topic either doesn't affect me, or it's talked about in a way that excludes me from the conversation."
Vox pop
"I probably won't pay attention to specific things, only the general gist of what the parties are doing. There aren't serious specific issues that have to be addressed."
Vox pop
"The only thing I've learnt from John Howard is you don't hear about something they're going to do that you really disagree with, until after the election."
Vox pop
"We need change. Change brings difference. Difference is very important. We don’t know what is going to happen, but we won’t know till we get there. We need John Howard to retire. Need some young blood. We get the young one in, he’ll be elected for four to eight years, then we’ll dump him."
Vox pop
"To capture the youth vote, stop wasting our time with your pathetic backtalk and actually list the facts of what you will do for our country in your tv advertisements."
Vox pop
"I haven't heard anything about what they're doing for youth programs. They're all on about the 'big issues' that affect my parents because they're the biggest vote."
Vox pop
Although it's one vote, I look forward to the thought that there will be many many many more single votes who feel the same way as me towards the incumbent Federal Government.
Vox pop
"I think the number one youth issue is housing affordability. I would like to see the issue addressed with real solutions."
Vox pop
"I would just like more candid interviews, personal stuff, where we can get to know the politicians, who may run our country better."
Vox pop
I’d like to see them getting out there more and putting themselves out on the line by honestly answering young people’s questions, even the tricky ones. Also, using other means besides the internet to engage with young people like more public conferences.
Vox pop
"[I would like to see] more long term vision rather than short term politicking. Of couse that would require voters to forgo some of their selfishness for now and think about the future, so one can't really fault politicians for playing the games to get them elected. It's a weakness of our system."
Vox pop
"Mark Vaile trying to skateboard wearing a backwards Nationals cap does not constitute 'engaging with young people'"
