National Tally Room 6: Ruddslide

by Nick Parkin last modified 24-11-2007 21:52

Nick Parkin wants to be the first person in the Tally Room to call the election.

It's all over. An opposition Labor party has been elected for only the third time in Australian political history. A Prime Minister has also lost his seat for only the second time in Australian political history.

Kevin Rudd will be our new Prime Minister. John Howard will be unemployed. The 68-year-old is about to find out if AWAs are really as fair as he claims they are.

But while the election is over, the fun and games of politics will continue. The next few days are going to be very interesting for both parties.

Rudd will grip to power like a newly-appointed dictator. He will decide cabinet. He will decide policy. And any meddlesome ALP members (probably from the left) who get in his way will be silenced and dispatched quickly.

On the Liberal side, all hell will break loose. Howard is gone. Costello will try and take his place, but Abbott and Turnbull may attempt to stop him. Even if Costello does succeed in becoming the new leader, there is going to be a nasty stoush for Treasury.

A new dawn will beam across Australia tomorrow.

And no doubt everyone – whether Liberal or Labor – will be hungover for it. We may be divided on political beliefs, but, in the end, we are all united as one.

Onya Kev!
